I was surprised and amazed by this book. This is the same author of Gates of Fire fame. This is so well written and researched that I thought I was reading a true story. It is faction.
LRDG (Long Range Desert Group) in North Africa in WW2. The LRDG are the lesser-sung heroes, but of the special units forming at the time, they were the ones that did what they said on the tin. The SAS had a very patchy record at that time, and in fact it was only once they adopted the methods / use of the LRDG that they became successful.
Of course it all sprang out of a bunch of interwar enthusiastic amateur army officers who were in an automobile club that used to do expeditions out into the desert, and found all the ways of getting up and down the dunes on the sand sea etc. I once read a biographical account of that and will need to try and lo that up again. Riding a motorbike between India and Cairo to report for a new assignment!
Poignant for me was the description of the guns to the west as the LRDG patrol sat to the east of the Battle of Alamein. One of my Grandfathers was a sapper in that battle, clearing the lanes through the minefields that night under the artillery bombardment, having to stand upright becasue he was operating the metal detector.
The scenes described after that I found simply amazing. You will have to read it to find out what goes on. HEAT 2 this past weekend almost missed a day of training because I was reading that part in the morning and almost refused to show!
This MAY be the one I was referring to. Written in 1945. Have bought on Kindle and will let you know.
I enjoy Pressfield’s novels. Good find.

Just finished the audiobook this morning. The last hour of the book was awesome. Crazy hard to believe. The mission and environment those guys had to undertake was unbelievable. Great read.
