This book was written by Kurt Gabel. A German Jew who made it to America in 1938. Once he became of age he enlisted. Turned down by the Air Corps and the Navy because he was a foreign national, the Army accepted him and he volunteered for the Paratroops.

He ended up staying in the Army became an officer and retired.

This book follows him from just before shipping out all the way through to just before Operation Varsity. He died before he could finish it.

I have had this book since it first came out and I still re-read it every couple of years.
