So my son is seriously considering joining the military either full time or NG when he’s finished with school in another year and half.

He was reared on an AK but does have a little experience with the M4.

So I’ll probably buy an M4 soon so that he can get some more experience with that beforehand.

For those recently out or still serving, what model/make AR would be closest to what was issued? Are optics used or not? Guess I’ll be in the market for an M4 for him to train with soon   lol, the things we do for our children….

I believe 1st Serg has said a stock Colt 6920 is the closest thing to the M4. So look at about a $1000 investment if you go that route. But it’s a good gun and will serve you well for many years.

My mom said I could be anything I wanted to be when I grew up. So I chose to be a man.

Warning: My opinion is not as expert as some.

I think any quality M4 style would be a good choice as long as it is stock and not tricked out.

BLUF: Know how to use the M16-A2 (iron sights), M4 with CCO (M68 or Aimpoint), M4 with ACOG TA31-RCO.

You don’t need to buy one, but it will be a LONG time before the Army gets rid of the A2. I shot a re-arsenalled A1 in BOLC in 2012. I think it is still the “official” rifle of the Army and I THINK they are still using it at BCT. At least at Ft Jackson. I am pretty sure they are using an M4 variant at BCT at Ft Benning.

Either way, chances are good he will at some point end up having to qual with an A2. Alot of NG units have M4s now having been issued them for deployment.

I haven’t seen any M4s floating around my sphere of the Reserves and my unit shares a building with a DS unit and is Brigade HQ+ 2 battalions for a deployable engineer brigade and they run around with A2s with CCOs attached.

If he goes strictly combat arms, he probably won’t spend as much (if any) on the A2.

I am NOT combat arms, so all the M4’s I have seen have been mostly NG along with a few SF when I was on active duty and they all had Knight’s armament free float rails from what I could tell.

The optics vary depending on unit and mission, but they ain’t getting rid of the CCO’s anytime soon either.

If you really want the “Real Deal”, put a cleaning rod on a drill and run it in the bore for about 10 minutes which simulates the overcleaning-to-death of alot of rifles in the Army.

Difference between a 6920 and M4:6920 bbl length is 16″, M4 is 14.5″. M4 has the burst trigger, M4A1 has full auto and 6920 is semi auto. Everything else is exactly the same.

As was said above, depending on MOS or unit of assignment, he may see an A2.

Learn the iron sights because optics break. The most issued is the Trijicon M68 CCO. But it’s not so much the sight as learning to shoot with a RDS.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

    Robert,
Get an A3 carry handle for the 6920. It has the 600m adjustable rear sight.

How close is the “Colt Expanse M4” $699

    or the Ruger AR556? $499.

Can’t paste the link but they were both on CDNN’s website and emailout.

Go to gun broker and search for colt le6920 oem. They are listed for $731, they come without the furniture and rear site which most people change out anyway.

The Ruger is probably a well made rifle, as most Rugers are, but in typical Ruger fashion, it has proprietary parts. I know the front sight tower is not standard, but not sure about other parts. I’m actually surprised they didn’t make it to take a proprietary magazine.

I read on arfcom that the Colt Expanse is not milspec materials

Either one will probably work fine, but then there might be parts compatibility issues. There are so many options right now that I would keep looking.

Can’t answer 100%, but here is what I think I know.
The Ruger does not appear to have a chrome lined or nitrided barrel. At least it is not mentioned on their website. While they mention that their bolts are 9310 alloy, they don’t mention what the barrel is made of. In terms of ARs this usually means 4140 which is a less expensive and easier to machine steel than 4150 and/or whatever true mil spec is. 4150 and/or whatever true mil spec is is a selling point and is always mentioned by a manufacturer.

    I wouldn’t buy it.

The Colt is a different story. From what I can tell from their website the barrel is 4150 and chrome lined. Actually looking at the 6920 Vs the Expanse spec sheet, they look identical. BUT the prices are not the same so they had to scrimp somewhere. I am just taking a guess, but I suspect that they cut corners on quality assurance like the barrel and bolt might not be MPI or HPT. Still speculation on my part, but the barrel might not be Colt but from a less expensive OEM. Overall, I am just speculating.

As far as close enough to issue: It is probably close enough to issue to train with. It’s probably worth 699.00.

If you don’t want to deal with gunbroker.

I have been at class and missed this.

Don’t buy the Expanse. It was designed to compete with the entry level AR’s that are floating around out there.

You would be better off getting a 6920.

Robert still has those 3 shipping containers stacked up with 7.62 x 39. He might want to talk to Shane, who was running ball AK ammo through an AR at the Texas class.

Like I always say: get an AR.

I’ve been holding back on this one, I have to admit!

Teenager having done MVT training, will already be better trained than Basic!
