What am I doing here ….and where and why?
The clues are apparent and pronounced in a basic way..
Digging a dakota fire hole, using a moist sandy area because you can pack the sides to prevent them from collapsing inwards. The “why” would be because this method of fire lay makes for a near smokeless fire, and with the flames below ground they aren’t visible to Opfor.
My guess anyway.
WHAT-My first thought was a cache.
WHERE- In an easily recognizable spot.
WHY- above the waterline in easily dug soil.
I’m going with dakota firepit, with same reasoning as groundwork
Too small to bury a body, fire pit.

I don’t know what it is, but I don’t think it’s a Dakota hole, because the tunnel will collapse in sand. The problem with a cache in an easily recognizable spot is that it is easily recognized by looters.
How do you like that Glock shovel?

Water filtration hole. The sand filters out particulates etc from a nearby murky water source.
